Lagy Gaga- music video Essay- 18/01/2019

Lady Gaga- music video

Theories to apply for essay:

Van Zoonen- Feminist theory
- Suggests that believes about women are created through discourse communication such as from the media- films, music videos, posters, adverts on tv, television in general
- Women are highly objectified mostly in the music videos or in films/movies

bell hooks- Feminist theory
- Feminism is the struggle to stop the patriarchal oppression
- Feminism is a political commitment rather than a lifestyle choice
- Gender oppression is also very closely linked to race and ethnicity

Analyse how the Million Reasons music video by Lady Gaga uses stereotypes to represent a variety of images of feminine identity.

To begin with, the music video of Million reasons by Lady Gaga- Stefani Germanotta is based on a hearbreak after she has broken up with her boyfriend after being together for 5 years. However, the other main aspect seen in the video is the stereotypes used in order to represent images of feminine identity.

Firstly, in the beginning of the video she is found in the middle of the nothing laying on the ground looking very stressed and as if she has lost her mind. This can symbolise how Germanotta may feel that her life is currently out of control when she wrote the song . In aitiion to this, she can be seen as actually having a tantrum therefore she may be thinking of escaping the stardom as it is very stressful and pressuring at the same time. Also, its easily recognisable that she is very vulnerable and helpless as she is laying down on her own and also has her eyes closed therefore if there is a danger forecoming she would not even realise it. This can be as a result of the pressure put on her and the expectations placed on her. This instant representation of her can be linked to the fact that she has recently gone through of a break up with her boyfriend so she is still very upset about it as well as vulnerable. Her vulnerability can be a sign of a stereotype used to represent a feminine identity as this can imply that women are ''naturally'' and biologically created to be weaker than men and dominated by them. Her vulnerability suggests that she is accepting and going through the break up much harder than her boyfriend probably is, which focuses the audience's attention on the point that women are weaker, more emotional and over exxagerating things.

As she is laying down in the desert without having any activity or action going on around her this can exemplify that she is feeling completely alone through her battles both in her life as an artist and her social life. Moreover there is a connection made between her character and the desert as she feels lonely and the deserts are known for being hostile therefore they relate to eachother and both are used in order to represent the idea of isolation. These battles result in her being very emotional and moreover crying which is a very common stereotype related to women.

After her friends go to pick her up, she begins crying which clearly shows the stereotype that women are emotional and much weaker. Scientifically, women are tend to express their emotions much more than men. Also men and women express their emotions in different ways. The female's way of expressing emotions is oftenly by crying however the male's way is by reacting more angrily and aggressively. Furthermore, as he friends instantly run towards her to see what is happening can also symbolise the fact that she has her friends next to her and supporting her therefore she does not need a boyfriend or a man in general in her life.

As soon as she gets in the car we can see that she is wearing sunglasses and a hat which highlight that she clearly wants to hide her emotions are the glasses are purposely cover her eyes so she cannot be seen as being crying therefore weak. Also, this can link to the fact that her career does not give her time for her personal dramas and soon she needs to be on the stage therefore even if she is going through hard situations in her life on the stage she will need to act as if she is perfectly fine not showing her real emotions. While she is in the car the shot showing her wearing glasses and a hat is a close up shot therefore this type of shot is used in this specific moment to show her facial expression and features from a close perspective so the audience can get a clearer understanding of how she is feeling and to see what she is trying to hide from the audience.

Another stereotype which is distinctly shown in this music video is having Stefani Germanotta being dressed in a fully pink costume which is often associated with women especially younger girls like Lady Gaga in this case. In addition to this, in fact the colour pink is knows as the colour of sensitivity, which has passion of red combined with the purity of white associating this colour with love and femininity which illustrates the overall message of the music video. Also this colour is linked with tenderness and nurturing while conveying a sense of vulnerability which perfectly defines the situation of Stefano Germotta and her character especially. Therefore this colour perfectly matches the message which is tried to be conveyed through the video and on the other hand as pink is a bright and quite positive colour it has the connotations of hope therefore meaning that even though Lady Gaga is going through a very hard moment for her everything will be better as there is always hope and therefore she should not give up. Furthermore, as pink is associated with feminity it can also link this to another stereotype which is women being emotionally and physically weaker than the man shown through the moments where she is crying.
However there is a juxtaposition created when in the video she is seen to wear a cowboy hat which is mainly worn by men and is a defining piece of attire for the North American cowboy therefore meaning that Lady Gaga is a very powerful women in fact and doesn't act as a stereotypical weak and emotional women but actully fights for her rights to show this. This can therefore be linked to the theory of the theorist Van Zoonen who supports and takes the Feminist approach and is a Feminist. She suggests that believes about women are created through discourse communication such as from the media for example: music videos, movies/films, adverts on tv or from the television in general. For example in this video, stereotypes and believes of women in this Lady Gaga will be made based on her emotional state and looks- being emotional and crying showing weakness. Therefore through this representation of her in this video people will create stereotypes and believes that women are often emotional and weak. Therefore this is not valid and trustworty or representative as every women is different and this video is only a snapshot of her whole life which may be just showing a moment which i hard for her.
Moreover, bell hooks which is also a feminist believes that feminism is a struggle to end patriarchal opression and the ideology of domination. Therefore she would view this video as showing a struggle to end this patriarchal oppression and ideology of domination as in the video the women- Stefani Germanotta is seen as being very emotionl and crying therefore this clearly shows the domination of men and how they are dominant and stronger than women and women are weaker than them. This is further shown in the part where she goes back to the studio and the screen/background goe black&white to symbolize her emotional state, which is empty and hopeless. In order to show that the video's aim is to end this patriarchall oppression they must have represented Germanotta in a different way for exmaple by not showing her crying but showing her in a happy state where she can be seen that she is enjoying her life.

ILatly, the black&white background can also show negativity and pessimism therefore implying that the place at which she is at- the studio is not where she wants to be but she is being ignored and has to put up with it. Hence the line ''million reasons to let you go'' meaning she wants to quit her job and therefore the stardom as she is tired of it and pressured enough.

In conclusion, the overall message of the video is to convey the idea that even if you are going through hard moments, they will always exist however you need to be strong, wipe the tears off and continiue with life going forwards as there is always hope for something better coming in the furture. Also, in order to convey this message towards the audience the video uses many stereotypes to represent a variety of images of feminine identity and focuses on the topic and idea of femininity.

16/01/2019- Lady Gaga million reasons music video

Lady Gaga- Million reasons music video

Million Reasons music video- Lady Gaga

stereotypes:
- her outfit is all in pink which is a common stereotype for girls as the colour pink is associated with girls and emotionality
- she is crying in the part in which she is looking in the mirror which is a clear sign and shows that there has been a heartbreak in her life and she is overthinking what has happened
- the fact that she is crying and shouting suggests that she is very weak and this is stereotypical for girls as they are usually seen as weaker than men
- there is a juxtaposition between the pink coloured clothes and the boy type cowboy hat, which implies that just because she is wearing pink does not mean that she is weak
- after she runs out of the car and is found laying on the ground, her friends run to her which implies that she does not need a man in her life because her friends are there for her to support her.

the song lyrically delves on ''heartbreak and hope'' during a relationship
- Lady Gaga's religious faith during the chorus, ultimately make the song with a positive message with hope
- as the song and its lyrics are based on a heartbreak, the message behind is that you should never give up and there is always hope even in the darkest days. '' i try to make the worst seem better''
- she trie to focus on the positive stuff even thought bad events have happened

- Beginning of video around 2 seconds in, you see Joanne Germanotta (Lady Gaga) rolling through a desert as if she had just jumped from a car. This could foreshadow future events, and it could also link to how Germanotta might feel her life was spinning out of control when she wrote the song. In addition to this, she could be seen as actually having a tantrum, and both theories link to how she might want to escape stardom, or that she's had enough and feels like she's about to break because of the pressure put on her.
-At around 14 seconds, we see her finally stationary, lying down in the desert without much activity around her. It's like she feels completely alone in her battles as an artist in a cut-throat industry. It also could link to how deserts are famous for not having much life in them and being quite hostile, much like how Germanotta must feel at this time. It could connote to how she is burnt out from the music industry and that whatever complications she had with her significant other set her off the edge.
-After that scene, it cuts directly to a shot of multiple GMC Canyon SUVs stopping just beside the road to hat is most likely where Germanotta has found herself at this time. There are also multiple, some with pickups others as people carriers, which shows they are being utilised for quite a large production. This must mean that they are touring Germanotta around the country on one of those famous artist "tours" where they perform live in front of an audience. This then builds a better picture for the scene we've been put in, as it could mean that she not only has the stress of a breakup and the entire music industry, but also the stress of having to go across an entire country touring at different venues, which can often make one feel homesick. This could lead into the female stereotype of how they're depicted as emotional, and Germanotta might be feeling emotional due to a plethora of reasons.
-After a fade to black, it shows Germanotta in the back of one of the SUVs wearing a Gaga t-shirt, tinted glasses and a hat. The glasses+hat combo is something people always see in the music and film industry, as it is a very good way of hiding your face and/or emotions. For example, if a celebrity was seen crying on the street then the press would be all over that, which would send the celebrity into further stress. Moreover, if done correctly it can completely hide the identity of the wearer. In my opinion, I feel like she is wearing the items because of how she's had a rough day, wants to avoid most contact and wants to have some-what alone time while she can. However, returning to the shirt, it feels like she can't get away from the limelight no matter what, as her stage name is literally on her shirt right below her face. This gives context to how much of a celebrity she already is, if it wasn't obvious enough already.

-Million reasons to walk away, walk away from her job and popstar life, or from her last relationship
-Taken back home, not where she wants to be
-Being pandered to
-Being smothered
-Upset
-Hat, associated with cowboys
-doesn't want to be found
-Other people offer support
-The male driver offers support
-Black and white, in front of the mirror, removing her emotions, as she has to continue the show.
-Friends offer support
-Religious ties, "Lord show me the way"*, the rosary, the priest
-*ties in with the fact that she is lost

-in the beginning, she is rolling around in the dirt, like she is having a temper tantrum.

This song is about her being depressed with her life as a star, as shown in her reaction in the beginning of the video where she is either jumping out of a car or having a tantrum about her position. Also shown by her looking upset and angry in the car on the way back from the desert. While I'm on the subject the fact that she is out in the desert is proof that she is trying to run away from something, therefore she is in the desert. When she finally gets back to the studio? The screen goes black and white, to symbolize her emotional state, which is empty. She does not want to be where she is, but she is being ignored and has to put up with it. Hence the line "million reasons to let you go", meaning that she wants to stop her job.

he goal you’d originally have when launching Minecraft was to spawn in, survive, and maybe build a few structures.

To begin with, Minecraft is a sandbox type of game which is a style of a game in which there is minimal character limitations placed on the gamer, allowing the gamer to roam freely. There are no fixed rules or a set objective that the gamer has to achieve neither are there numbered levels. A sandbox game is also reffered to as an ''open world'' or ''free-roaming game'' where the gamer is given complete freedom in choosing how to play the game using their own imagination and by not hving any specific goals to accomplish.
The sandbox video game was created by the Swedish developer- Markus Persson, and later developed by Mojang. The full version of the game was released in November 2011. After its release, in 2014 the game Minecraft was bought by Microsoft for 1.5billion from its original creators and as of 2014 it sold 54 million copies for computers, consoles and mobile devices. By late 2018, there was a total of 154 million copies of the game being sold.

The game allows its players to build a variety of different blocks in a 3D generated world, requiring creativity and imagination from the players. Other main activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting and combat.

After its releas, the game was in fact very simple. The goal gamers were setting themslves was to spawn in, survive in general and maybe build a few structures.
As players felt the game was too slow without being able to run, additions like running and Redstone wer added at the perfect time. After everybody seemed like they understood Redstone fully and mostly got used to the updates and new additions, Command Blocks were added to further complicate the process. So, these were the first additions and technological dvelopments of the game.
As time past, ther were and more and more updates added to the game. At the beginning, in August 2011 minecraft pocket edition was released for the Xperia Play, available on Sony Xperia smartphones. Later in November 2011, there was an IOS version released for iphones and apple devices. So, by 2012, Minecraft was available for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. Making the game available on much more advices increased its popularity and its users as everyone has different devices therefore it became available for more users.

Increases younger audience
If there is memes of minecraft then this means that it is trendy and popular therefore people who have not played it will be interested and may download it to try play the game therefore it they like it they will speak to their friends and tell them to download it and play it.

The synergy used between Lego and Minecraft was useful in targeting younger audiences as it attracted more audience and people to play it as the games are both sandbox games and it attracted people who are interested in paying construction sandbox games. The two games are both very similar and their main focus is constructing with not having any set or fixed rules. Also, the synergy between the two games has not created a conflict but in contrast a friendly partnership. Moreover, the synergy has created a different third game which is a combination of the favourite two games of the younger generation and audience. (Lego and Minecraft combines forming a third game with qualities of the two games).
This kind of games are mostly targetted at the male audience as boys are mostly interested in constructing world and things.
By creating this new game using this synergy this engages more and more players as it interests them further as it reinforces new games with similar qualities of the previous games.
By having this synergy they both promote and advertise eachother which is very helpful for their profits.

The developers at Mojang and Microsoft worked closely with us to bring Minecraft to VR.

The Oculus Rift- virtual reality being included to Minecraft makes it more interesting and therefore more people would want to download the game.
The game becomes more immercive that way.
Shows the development and advance of technology.
Its easier to play and makes people more mobile, not just sit at one place.

Microsoft Realms 2013

The introduction of Minecraft Realms (2013) has tried to give the producers more control over the distribution and circulation of the game since some pro-am consumers were creating their own virtual spaces and hacks across illegitimate servers, such as https://www.wizardhax.com/ play/ as one example.

Realms is intended for use by small  groups of friends or as a family server.

Discuss why users are creating media content is important for maintaining audiences.

After a video game has been advertised enough and has become famous enough YouTubers start making their new videos based on these games so they can get more viewers and subscribers. Furthermore, as they start basing their videos on themselves playing the specific game , the users of the game watch their videos as it teaches them tricks and shows them how they may play the game more successfully and in a better way so the users of the game remain and do not drop out.  By having more games released the videos of the YouTubers will become more famous and entertaining therefore it will help them to get more subscribers and viewers. Therefore, the video games and the YouTubers with videos based on the video games actually help and support eachother in this way by avertising eachother.
